Briana studied Kale as they left the Horse Whisperer.

What is it with Kale McLaren? My first love captured my heart, and then broke it. He made me leery of relationships, which may have saved me, but I don’t know. I like my life, my freedom, no ties to anyone but whom I want to be tied to for the moment. But, I don’t know. What I saw with Gloria and Hunter is special. She sighed.

“Are you okay?” Kale asked.

“Yeah. Just thinking.”

“About?”

“Nothing that concerns you.”

Kale shrugged.

Briana studied him. No doubt, she was drawn, but she needed to be cautious. The reason for her feelings most likely lie in the danger they face and the fact that they’re working so close together. Once they find Hunter and the killer, these feelings will disappear.

As they reentered the tunnel, Briana stretched. “This is the second time the Horse Whisperer left me with two contrasting emotions, both peace and urgency. And I’ve only seen him twice.”

Kale nodded. “He certainly has insight. In my experience, people like the Horse Whisperer have a gift that is reliable. Time is short. I believe Hunter may still be alive, but not for long.”

Briana looked sideways at him. “And what type of experiences have you had?”

He smiled. “Oh, various sorts. But, as I mentioned earlier, search and rescue has been a popular one for me.”

“As the rescuee or searcher?” Briana chided.

“Definitely the searcher. You mentioned clues from Jimmy. I came in at the end, so I missed out. I think we should revisit him.”

“We’re near the kitchen. Let’s find Nate and see what we can do,” Briana said, heading for the kitchen.

Briana found Nate at work in the back of the kitchen. “Would it be possible for us to meet with Jimmy? We’d like to see if we can draw him out.”

Nate looked from Briana to Kale. “Is Father Daniel with you? He had mentioned that he can perform an exorcism.”

Kale drew in a breath and slowly let it out. “Nate, I’ve done some work with patients on the autism spectrum who have exhibited the same type of behavior that Jimmy exhibits. They responded to me. I’d like to try and draw him out before Father Daniel performs an exorcism, but if it would make you feel more comfortable, we can send Maggie up to stay with Gloria and have Father Daniel come down.”

Nate said, “I’d appreciate that.” He turned to Maggie. “I know you’ve been up all night helping out, would you mind asking Father Daniel to come down while you stay with Miss Harrington?”

Maggie dried her hand on the towel and covered her mouth as she yawned. “Would love to.”
